Visitors to Singapore during September should make sure they head to the Qi Tian Gong temple, for during this month its residents celebrate the birth of its deity, Qu Tian Da Sheng - the Monkey God.

Many flock to this festival, from as far away as Indonesia, to pay homage to the Monkey God by skewering body parts to loud drum beats, gongs and popping firecrackers.

In Singapore, the Monkey God being celebrated is Confucian and the event is a huge occasion for the Chinese.

Visitors can see a massive procession of gongs and cymbals winding its way up the hill to the temple, which features lions, dragons and of course statues of the Monkey God carried on chairs.

Singapore is a modern city, but tourists can still experience its cultural history, so make sure you don't miss the Birthday of the Monkey God.
