Home to over 3600 mammals, reptiles and birds, the Singapore Zoo is renowned worldwide as one of
the most fascinating zoos. The zoo is based on a novel concept which surrounds animals with natural
barriers such as vegetation, rock walls and streams to separate them from visitors.
Scattered across over 28 hectares, the zoo is home to endangered and rare species as well. It
carries out a special breeding programme for endangered species like orang utans and polar bears.
Among the other endangered species that find the zoo to be a haven are the white rhino, the Malayan
tiger and proboscis monkey.
One of the most significant features of the garden is the Night Safari, which allows visitors
to view animals in their nocturnal setting. A special form of illumination replicating moonlight
aids the activity which has made the zoological garden the world’s premier night zoo. Visitors can
enjoy the Singapore Night Safari tour as they please, either by taking a tram ride or walking along
the trail. The enclosure of the Night Safari is separated into eight geographical zones.
The 40-minute tram ride journey from the Himalayan foothills to wild Equitorial Africa
affords encounters with numerous wild animals including tigers, lions and tapirs. Among the special
highlights of the walking trail is the Fishing at Trail where cats can be seen watching their prey
in deep concentration before instantly lunging into the water to pin the fish down.
One of the special shows of the Night Safari is a presentation featuring creatures ranging
from intuitive civets to nimble binturongs. The show with its interactive format is quite popular
among the visitors.
