For seafood lovers and connoisseurs of authentic Singaporean hawker fare, no food adventure is
complete without experiencing the delights of the Newton Circus Food Centre. Promoted and
maintained by the Singapore Tourism Board, this foodie-Mecca is located in the Newton Planning Area
in Central Singapore and is the best-known hawker center in the Lion City.
The food centre is a distinctive venue, whose design emulates the colonial architecture of
the stately dwellings in the vicinity. Seven-metre high ceilings ensure a cooling and
well-ventilated environment aromatized by the delectable smells of varied home-cooked delicacies.
These emanate from the 80 plus number of food stalls that are arranged in horse-shoe formation. The
main entrance and hawker centre are adorned by over 50 species of exotic flora such as palms,
wedelia creepers and pink frangipani, as is the central food court, where buskers can serenade the
diners as they relish their meals at tables bearing colourful parasols.
Barbequed seafood stalls are by far the most popular with the throngs of food-lovers that
frequent the arena, with Hokkien prawn noodles, fishball noodles, fish porridge and popiah coming
close seconds. Their satays and fried oyster omelettes are also famous, as is the chicken rice
dishes.
Food and music are not the only things visitors can look forward to when at the Newton
Circus. Several flea markets have also been set up around the area, allowing shopaholics to indulge
their talents for bargain-hunting.
Newton Circus abounds Tanglin Road, which means that the Orchard Hotel Singapore has the
advantage of being one of the hotels near Newton Circus that affords its guests the best access to
the plethora of mouth-watering tastes and tempting aromas of this foodie-haven.
