The Asian Civilisation Museum in Singapore is a pioneering institution having the distinction of
being the initial establishment in the region to project a wide-ranging but integrated outlook on
pan-Asian civilizations and cultures. The museum, operating under Singapore’s National Heritage
Board aims to foster a deeper understanding of the diverse and fascinating cultures which are part
of Singapore’s cosmopolitan society.
While the ancestors of today’s Singaporeans arrived in the city-state from far-flung parts of
Asia in the last two centuries, the cultures that these migrants represent are much older. These
cultures are the focal point of the Asian Civilisations Museum; the collections of the museum
depict the cultures of these settlers who originated from areas as diverse as Southeast Asia,
China, West Asia and South Asia.
The museum’s magnificent premises at Empress Place which was opened in 2003 features more
than 14,000 square metres of exhibition space with more than 1,300 artefacts housed in 11
galleries. A programme of varying special exhibitions is presented the year round for the benefit
of visitors - local residents as well as foreign guests.
Functioning as a microcosm of the diverse Asian civilisations the museum presents the
fascinating aspects of these cultures in an innovative manner with the assistance of modern
technology. The legacy of Asia is portrayed with special components and multimedia; visitors will
encounter interactive ExplorAsian displays, in-gallery videos and virtual hosts. These exciting
features serve as captivating devices which enable guests to learn about the enthralling
multi-faceted features of the varied civilizations of Asia.
The museum premises also contain a restaurant, a café, a comprehensively equipped auditorium,
a function room and a museum shop.
