Guests staying in Singapore hotels should not finish their stay without taking in one of the island's national pastimes – shopping.

With malls, markets and shops galore, visitors can browse to their hearts' content in bustling Chinatown, vibrant Little India and the bohemian Holland Village.

Orchard Road is often compared with London's Oxford Street and is packed with modern malls.

Hotel visitors can stay all day, starting in Tanglin Mall on Tanglin Road and continuing down to Plaza Singapura at the lower end of Orchard Road, taking in the Centrepoint shopping centre and the trendy Far East Plaza. The Paragon Shopping Centre may entice customers looking for luxury goods.

Little India caters for the island's Indian population, and is a buzzing, colourful district. Serangoon Road boasts shops selling spices, saris and jewellery, and the Mustafa Centre on Syed Alwi Road is Singapore's first 24-hour department store with good prices on all sorts of products.

Chinatown is arguable one of the best areas to be in for Chinese New Year, as blazing light displays captivate visitors. Stretching between Eu Tong Sen Street, New Bridge Road and South Bridge Road, the best way to get around Chinatown is by foot.
