Champion golfers Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington look set to check into a Singapore hotel next month after it was confirmed they will be competing in the city.

The two former major winners will play in the Singapore Open 2009 at Sentosa in a bid to boost their European Tour rankings, as the tournament will be co-sanctioned by the Asian and European tours.

Last year saw Harrington and Els tied in second place behind Singapore Open 2008 champ Jeev Milka Singh.

This year will be a "fantastic" event according to the Asian Tour boss Kyi Hla Han.

He told Reuters: "With the inclusion of the European Tour as a sanctioning partner, this event provides the galleries with a world-class spectacle of golf."

Their commitment to playing the Singapore Open means that Harrington and Els will not be competing in the Match Play event which is being held in Marbella at the same time.

Defending champ Els told Reuters while he would have loved to play in both the Singapore Open and the Match Play, he had to choose one.

"It is not possible to be in two places at once," he stated to Reuters.
