A highly anticipated sporting extravaganza, the Singapore Grand Prix is a premier motor racing
event, known for its extraordinary speed-thrills. A coveted fixture in the calendar of the FIA
Formula 1 World Championship, it is annually held at one of the popular destinations in Singapore,
Marina Bay.
Attracting large crowds of locals and tourists alike, the Singapore F1 was inaugurated in
1961. Initially known as the “Orient Year Grand Prix”, the event was discontinued in 1973, due to a
series of unfortunate events. Upon its resurrection in 2008, the Singapore Grand Prix rose to fame
yet again after a successful return to the international motor sport scene.
Officially declared as the Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix, the annual event is
organised by Singapore Telecommunications and the Singapore Tourism Board. The first race drew a
large crowd of well-over 110,000 spectators and went on to achieve a recording breaking sell-out of
all of its tickets. To add further lustre to the spectacular event, its inaugural event
commemorated the first ever night-time motor race in Formula One history.
Having celebrated its third year, the Singapore Grand Prix adds to the thrilling action of
the sport by featuring a stellar line-up of exhilarating events, coupled with an exciting ensemble
of exclusive parties, star-studded music concerts, race-themed events, and exhibitions. Travellers
to the action-packed event will be amidst an enriching cultural experience, one that is fuelled by
the glitz and glamour of the dynamic metropolis. The 2011 edition is set to take place on the 23rd
September, where travellers can look forward to catching a glimpse of Formula One cars blazing
across the death-defying circuit.
