The thrill of Formula One in Singapore will be the ultimate thrill for the many thousands of
motor racing enthusiasts fortunate enough to witness this spectacular event. The Singapore F1 Grand
Prix always brings the glamour, excitement and prestige of the world’s premier motor racing arena
to the small but significant Asian city-state.
This highly anticipated motor race is presently held at the Marina Bay Street Circuit; the
Grand Prix was first held at this venue in 2008 and it had the distinction of being Formula One’s
initial nighttime race. This circuit is considered to be a truly world class course, challenging
for drivers and enthralling for spectators. Typically the actual Grand Prix is preceded by an
entertainment line-up which extends over several days, including race-oriented events, parties,
musical concerts and exhibitions as well as shopping and dining festivities.
The Singapore Grand Prix has its origins in the motor race which was first conducted in 1961,
at which time the event was called the Orient Year Grand Prix. In the subsequent year the motor
race was rechristened as the Malaysian Grand Prix. When Singapore achieved independence from
foreign rule in the year 1965 the race was renamed the Singapore Grand Prix. However the race was
not held after 1973; it was only in 2008 that the race was resurrected as the first real Formula
One contest to be held in Singapore.
The fact that the Formula One competition, with its exalted standards, multi-million dollar
contracts and high profile participates in the city-state of Singapore underlines its significance
as a major hub for international tourism and leisure as well as a globally renowned commercial
destination.
