The appealing Robertson Quay in Singapore never fails to captivate the visitor with its unique
ambience and attractions. Perhaps less animated than the nearby Boat Quay, Robertson Quay
presents a more laid-back atmosphere but has no lack of attractions with a multitude of wine bars,
international restaurants offering outdoor dining, charming cafes and arts houses. Today’s
traveller will see exciting nightlife venues at Robertson Quay where the fashionable residents of
the city arrive to unwind with the backdrop of the quaint old godowns of Singapore.
In 1999 the government of Singapore launched an initiative to transform the Singapore River
area into a recreational locale. As a part of this programme Robertson Quay was made more
attractive and converted into a scenic promenade. Three bridges reserved for pedestrians, Alkaff
Bridge, Robertson Bridge and Jiak Kim Bridge were constructed for the benefit of visitors who may
now cross the river and enjoy the panoramic views.
In days gone by the merchants who frequented the area constructed warehouses, offices and
jetties at the quay, to assist in the delivery and loading of merchandise. Little children would
habitually wave from the old houses built on the river banks, and would often remove their clothes
to enjoy a dip in the cool river waters.
Singapore River is an attraction in its own right, with many visitors taking the opportunity
to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the river banks. Alternatively tourists may take a ride on a
bumboat or glass-top boat to enjoy a delightful river cruise. The river lays claim to a rich
history as the traditional lifeline of the beautiful and prosperous Lion City.
