Founded in 1859 as a leisure garden and ornamental park, the Botanic Garden Singapore is a
lively and happening place which attracts thousands of visitors every year. With the tremendous
boom in the rubber industry during the late 1800s the Botanic Garden played a major role in
Singapore's history and growth as the gardens had a ready source of seed supply when the rubber
rush came. The Botanic Garden Singapore also played a major part in the discovery and
popularization of Vanda Miss Joaquim, Singapore's national flower.
Among the many attractions available within the Botanic Garden in Singapore, the National
Orchid Garden takes pride of place. The 3 hectare area features a stunning collection of more than
1,000 species and 2,000 hybrids of orchids. The orchid garden too has many mini attractions such as
Burkill Hall & VIP Orchid Garden, the Orchidarium a haven for orchid enthusiasts, Tan Hoon
Siang Misthouse and the Lady Yuen-Peng McNeice Bromeliad House.
The Cool House within the botanic garden tries to recreate the environment of a tropical
highland forest while the
Singapore Botanic Gardens also has a small
tropical rainforest, of around six hectares in size. A comparatively new attraction to the botanic
garden is the Evolution Garden, which tells the evolution story of plant life on Earth throughout
the ages.
Other attractions within the Botanic Garden Singapore include the Palm Valley, Bandstand
area, Sun Garden and Sundial Garden. The garden also has three lakes, which showcase musical
performances during certain weekends. A French restaurant in a colonial type bungalow, a café and
gift shops all add up to make the Botanic Garden Singapore.
As a hotel near the Singapore Botanic Garden, Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel Singapore
provides easy access to this great tourist attraction in the city, and others that reside in the
close proximity.
