The production of the Imperial Concubine Yang opens in Singapore today (Tuesday January 13th).

Imperial Concubine Yang will be staged at the Drama Centre Theatre on the third level of the National Library.

The three-hour operatic production by Tung On Wui Kun will be performed by the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Academy 1st Troupe and follows the story of Emperor Xuanzhong (also known as Tang Ming Huang) and his favourite concubine Lady Yang.

Set in China in the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907 AD), the production begins as the emperor is forced to flee from his palace during a rebellion, taking his mistress Lady Yang along with him.

The lead role is played by Ding Fan, one of the most popular male artistes on the Chinese Cantonese Opera circuit.

Tickets to the concert are priced at between S$20 and S$80 (excluding booking fees). Concessions for students from recognised institutions are currently available.
