Fort Canning Lighthouse
Location & Attractions|Fort Canning LighthouseAt the summit of Fort Canning Hill, towering over the busy waters of the Singapore Harbour is the Fort Canning Lighthouse, an imperative structure used as a communication centre in 1819. The port was established in 1819 by the British and during the later years, the first flagstaff was built followed by a lighthouse, a time ball and a telegraph office. The flagstaff confirmed the identity, arrival, status and location of all vessels that entered the harbour. Towards the southern side of Fort Canning Hill, the Fort Canning Lighthouse was constructed to safely guide ships towards the harbour. The first signal light was radiated in 1855 by the beam of a lantern, attached to the top of the flagpole. The initial beams of light that brought home the many crews of sailors were later replaced by a lighthouse which survived the destruction of the Second World War. In December 1958 however, the taller sleek skyscrapers that now haunt the city streets of Singapore made reason to dismantle the first Lighthouse and erect a replacement atop the Fullerton Building. In 1979, the Fullerton Light made its way to the Maritime Museum of Singapore; conversely a replica of the Lighthouse has been constructed due to its significance. The lights are completely functional, although they do not serve the ultimate purpose they was built for, but stand only as a mere iconic memento of maritime history of Singapore.
